Turning up to class with a wrinkled Karate Gi is not a good look. It shows disrespect to your dojo and to your instructor. So here are a couple of ways to fold your Karate uniform, better known as a Gi.

Why bother folding it?

Because it helps maintain your gi shape and fit, keeps it wrinkle-free and makes it easy to transport!

We have found this handy video for you that shows you two ways to fold you Gi and keep it wrinkle free:

  • The first method is called “Shikaku no Gi” (squarely folded gi) and works best if you’re packing your gi neatly along with other stuff.
  • The second way is called “Maki no Gi” (rolled gi) and works best if you’re carrying the gi without a training bag but still want to look cool.

Explanation:

#1. Shikaku no Gi (Square Fold)

Step by Step:

Instructions:

  1. Put your folded pants over your open jacket.
  2. Fold the jacket sides over the pants, then fold back the sleeves.
  3. Fold up the jacket/pants from the bottom twice.
  4. Tie your belt around the whole package.
  5. Put it in your bag and get to training.

#2. Maki no Gi (Round Fold)

Step by Step:

Instructions:

  1. Put your folded pants over your open jacket.
  2. Fold the jacket sides over the pants, then fold back the sleeves.
  3. Roll up the jacket/pants from the bottom.
  4. Tie your belt around the gi sausage.
  5. Swing over your shoulder and get to training

positive review Sensei Chris and Paula have created an amazing club where kids not only learn great skills in self defence, they are encouraged to develop life skills in respect, leadership, commitment, hard work and have a greater self worth. I can’t believe the changes I’ve seen in my son who is a more confident, determined and respectful young man which has been further developed through the Leadership program he’s now in. The vibe of the club is welcoming, encouraging and run professionally, which shows by the number of new kids we see joining all the time. Thank you!!!
